Howie taught a 4 hour photo course for the WMS (Wilderness Medical Society) in Feb 2011.
Here are some of the participants comments:
"I loved that Howie contacted us asking for our interests before the course. He also took the time to help me purchase a camera. His teaching style is unusual but ultimately effective. It felt like a genuine discovery process and not only a set of technical skills and this was seemingly intentional. This was a good way to communicate the intangible motivations, the love and awe of nature, etc. and focus on the experience decreasing the anxiety of those of us who are just beginning. Howie understands photography very well but was humble about it. Howie is a soulful teacher and this has been rare in the courses I have taken. His allowance for interruptions and clarifications and his willingness to repeat himself with great patience compensated well for my hands on needs. The notes he wrote will help me as I start trying-out some of the things he taught us and I am thankful for that. After Howie's photo class, I am now more interested in discovering how I can make a difference in the world using photography in addition to using it for teaching."
Alberto Montoya M.D., Family Physician
"This is a great course taught by a great photographer, and it is one which will interest
photographers with widely differing levels of experience. Howie starts with the basics of
understanding and operating a modern digital camera, then covers a wide variety of intermediate
and advanced topics which should interest any photographer. Discussion is encouraged, and
there is plenty of time for questions and answers. The course is specifically tailored to the needs
of the participants. It is particularly well suited for the following people:
- Beginners who own an advanced point and shoot or SLR camera and want to move beyond "point and shoot" photography.
- Intermediates who wish to learn about composition, advanced focusing and metering techniques, flash applications, filters, lens selection, and high dynamic range.
- Advanced photographers who wish to discuss techniques specific to outdoor and wilderness applications."
"Howie is a great teacher and I was able to learn more from this class than from six
months of experience in the field! What I loved most about this course was the manner
in which he teaches...no question is off limits! From the very novice,, just trying to learn
the basics, to the more experienced, he treats every question as important. He makes the
student comfortable in this environment, and thus facilitates the learning process."
Sarah Brummel
"Some very interesting points that I have not heard in other photography sessions."
"For me, this was a great course on reviewing the basics and exploring ways to improve my photography."

At the request of the Utah Public Health Laboratory, Dr. Howie Garber graciously agreed to lend his time and talents to present some of his best wildlife photographs at the first Utah Public Health Grand Rounds workshop on Climate Change and Public Health held on Earth Day 2009. Dr. Garber's photographs and his experiences in obtaining them were a perfect complement to the scientific presentations and provided the audience with a unique perspective of the impacts of climate change. The workshop participants, consisting of public health professionals from the public, private, academic, and clinical sectors found the presentation engaging, the photographs inspiring, and the message encouraging.

Howie has captured some of the most wonderful places on earth through his lens. He has given numerous presentations at our events around town to packed houses, and explains the importance of protecting these endangered landscapes. Howie is very knowledgeable about his subjects and is a lively story teller. Through these presentations, each one of his still photos comes to life.

I had the pleasure of recently viewing a slide presentation by Howie Garber. I was amazed at the beauty, stillness, peace, and soul contained in the photos. Dr. Garber went to amazing lengths to obtain many of these images and his patience and creativity are clearly evident. The show was a treat. I have to say I felt calmer and more at peace at the end of the show, and the beautiful memories are still with me. Thanks.

For the opening celebration at the Utah Museum of Natural History’s exhibit America’s Wildest Places, Howie Garber generously shared his stories and remarkable images in a travelogue to the wild places he has documented. As one who has attended more than one of Dr. Garber's community slide shows, I whole heartedly recommend these to anyone concerned about our environment and the world in which we all live. Dr. Garber as a unique way of capturing our beautiful landscape - the wildlife and people with which we share this precious earth with. His stories of travel and the intimate stories related to the photograph/prints and his ability to tell these captivating stories makes for a wonderful educational experience!

My wife and I saw a picture that Howie took and we had to have it. We arranged to meet with Howie to purchase it and he told us all about the picture and where it was shot. He made us feel as though we'd been friends forever and he even took photos of my family for us to take home along with the beautiful picture we purchased. His prices are very reasonable considering how great the photos are which will allow us to buy more from him in the future. Our experience meeting Howie and buying from him was awesome. thanks.....

I have always admired Howie's photography work. When I requested one of his mountain goat photos, Howie sent me a selection of his best photos to choose from, and then worked with me to select the appropriate print size, matting, and framing. Howie's studio took care of all of the details, and delivered a beautifully-framed, gorgeous photo that is installed in my home, where it makes a wonderful impression. Howie's photography helps me remember the joy I feel when I am in the mountains."

I can't help but stare......then smile......and then brush a few tears away. Your photos are so powerful yet delicate. I not only bought one for myself but for my son as his life can be summarized through your camera lens.
Thank you so much for entrusting some of your photos for us to use as a backdrop at the party announcing his engagement. The photos spoke a 1000 words.

"I bought one of Howie's pictures of China as a present for my brother after we attended the Olympics there. I felt really fortunate to find such a great picture of a place we had actually been. Hearing all the effort Howie had made to get the picture made it that much better and even more unique."
Dr. Brian Moench, Chairman, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment
It's been my privilege over the years to have the prints of Howie Garber hung in the walls of the Sports Mall. The members have enjoyed their beauty and the excellence that have gone into each of them. They have added to the environment in a most positive way. I have also enjoyed Howie slide shows and the real drama that go into his photos. His love of the outdoors and his ability to capture them with the camera is real magic to me.

I have purchased some of Dr. Garber' s photos/art in the past and have found his work to be incomparable and of the highest quality. I encourage you to look at his work, when you decide to purchase be sure to get the full story behind the print/picture. Each one of his prints has a unique story, pain-staking work and hours that went into each of his creations.
Dr. Garber has graciously placed his art on display at the Utah Department of Health offices at Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. These framed prints have been the focus of visitors attention as they visit these offices. Thank you for sharing some of your work with the UDOH and the citizens of Utah. Your work has transformed our offices.

Howie is a friendly and very knowledgeable photographer and tells the wonderful story behind each of his shots. He has participated in the annual CNS Art & Soup fundraiser and his booth is always full of curious buyers who want to know more about him and his beautiful artwork. I have purchased several photographs from Howie including "Thinking Gorilla" and I have had several people comment on how much they love that picture. I have seen his artwork at several medical buildings in Salt Lake and the photograhs just light up the hallways. Howie is easy to work with and even more fun to get to know.
